Extended data
Each row links to the state page with the latest events, magnitude bands and daily totals.
How the figures are counted: Per state: events of magnitude 1.5 or higher in the USGS catalog (type “earthquake”) in the 30 days before the data were pulled, assigned by the state name or postal abbreviation at the end of the USGS location label. Events with no state in the label (for example far offshore) are not counted here.
Worked example: Alaska: 2085 events in 30 days (about 486 per week).
Frequently asked questions
Which US state has the most earthquakes right now?
By the USGS count of M1.5+ events in the past 30 days, Alaska leads with 2085, followed by California with 479. Counts depend on how densely each state is monitored.
Why are some states missing?
A state gets a page only when the USGS list shows at least 15 events of M1.5 or higher in 30 days on at least 5 different days. States with fewer events are skipped rather than shown with thin data.
Is this an earthquake warning service?
No. These are automatic statistics from the USGS catalog, updated several times a day. For the official live map use the USGS Latest Earthquakes page, and in an emergency follow local officials.
